성직(聖職)이란 무엇일까요? 아니 참 성직자의 바람직한 모습은 어떤 것일까요? 성직자(聖職者)는 종교적 직분을 맡은 교역자(敎役者)를 말하지요. 신부, 목사, 승려, 교무 님 등이 있습니다.
그럼 성직자의 바람직한 모습은 어떤 분이어야 할까요?
첫째, 사랑과 배려가 있어야 합니다.
성직자는 모든 사람을 사랑하고 배려해야 합니다. 특히 가난한, 유린 당한, 사회적으로 소외된 사람들에게 특별한 관심과 돌봄을 기울여야 하지요. 성직자는 사랑의 봉사를 통해 사람들을 위로하고 지지해야 합니다.
둘째, 공정하고 도덕적인 삶을 살아갑니다.
성직자는 도덕적인 삶을 살아야 하며, 정직하고 공정한 태도를 갖춰야 합니다. 그분들의 행동과 선택은 모든 사람에게 영감과 안전한 영향을 미칩니다.
셋째, 희생과 헌신의 삶을 영위(營爲) 합니다.
성직자는 자기 희생의 정신을 가져야 합니다. 자신을 희생하여 사랑과 봉사를 베풀지요. 물질적인 욕망보다 신앙과 사명을 우선시해야 합니다.
아마 이외에도 많은 모습이 떠오를 것입니다. 여기 ‘수원 교구 전삼용 요셉 신부 님의 수필 집 <누구도 벼랑 끝에 서지 않도록>의 글에서, 바람직한 성직자의 모습을 찾아볼 수 있을 것 같아 요약 정리하여 소개합니다.
【이문수 신부는 낙담하고 좌절하는 순간이 오더라도, 청년들이 용기를 잃지 않았으면 좋겠다는 마음으로 『청년 밥상 ‘문간’』을 운영하고 있습니다. 「김치찌개 3 천 원, 무한 리필, 공기 밥은 공짜.」 개업 이후 거의 매달 적자를 내는 이 식당의 주인은 바로 이문수 신부 님입니다.
이문수 님의 원래 직업은 ‘가톨릭 신부’입니다. 어쩌다 보니 4년 째 아침 일찍 부터 저녁 늦게 까지 김치찌개 집에서 일하고 있습니다. 사실 신부 님이 식당 사장이 되기로 한 것은 고시원에서 굶주림으로 세상을 떠난 청년의 안타까운 사연을 접하고 난 후 부터 이었습니다.
그래서 이문수 신부 님은 누구나 언제든 와서 편안한 마음으로 배를 채울 수 있는 ‘식당’을 만들고 싶었지요. 고민만 하다가 시간이 흐르길 1 년 여 후, 원금 3 천만 원으로 밥 집을 열 공간을 찾다가 지금의 이 건물을 발견했습니다.
서울 북한산 전 경이 보이는 옥상을 보자마자 청년들이 이곳에서 잠시 나마 숨을 쉬고, 위로 받을 수 있겠다는 확신이 들었습니다. 인력과 자금이 부족했기 때문에 메뉴는 김치찌개 하나로 정하고, 가격은 대학교 학식의 평균 가격인 3 천 원으로 정했습니다.
식당을 하다 보니 신부로서 일만 할 때와 다르게 다양한 경험을 하고 있습니다. 그중에서도 기억에 남는 몇 가지 일화가 있습니다. 문 연 지 두 달도 채 되지 않은, 영하 10도 이하의 혹한이 계속되던 어느 날이었습니다.
아버지와 아들이 함께 식당을 찾았습니다. 얼른 팔팔 끓는 찌개를 대접해 몸을 녹여줘야 한다는 생각에 급해졌습니다. 그런데 그때 아이가 신부 님을 수줍게 불렀습니다. 그러고는 무어라 말해야 할지 몰라 머뭇거렸습니다. 그러자 아이의 아버지가 말씀하셨지요.
“아이가 1년 넘게 모은 저금통을 기부하고 싶다고 해서요.” 엉겁결에 받아 들었습니다. 세상에! 나중에 세어보니 10만 원이 훨씬 넘는 금액이었습니다. 열 살 짜리 에게 그것이 얼마나 큰 돈이었을까요? 누군 가를 위한 돼지 저금통에 차곡차곡 모아 놓은 그 정성과 선량함이 더 열심히 일하고 싶게 만들었습니다.
어느 날, 50대 여성이 어 두어진 저녁에 식당에 들어와서 김치찌개에 밥 한 그릇을 비웠습니다. 그러고는 계산을 하겠다면서 계산대 앞에 섰습니다. 돈 받을 준비를 하고 있는데, 갑자기 손님이 속삭이듯 말했습니다.
“여기 계신 손님들 것까지 다 계산해 주세요, 신부 님!” 손님은 그렇게 모두의 밥값을 계산하고 가셨습니다. 각자 계산할 때가 되어 서야 청년들은 비로소 누군가 밥값을 대신 내주고 갔다는 이야길 듣게 되었습니다. 영화에서 나 보던 일이 자신에게 벌어지다니 너무나 놀랍다고 들 했습니다.
그리고는 덧붙였지요. “저도 기회가 되면 다른 사람을 꼭 도울게요.” 아마 그 50대 아주머니 손님께서 가장 듣고 싶으셨던 말이 아닐까요? 최근에는 김치찌개 식당을 운영하는 식당 지기로 사는 삶을 크게 변화 시킨 계기도 있었습니다.
식당을 이대로 유지할 것인가? 더 많은 사람을 위해 버겁더라도 점포를 늘릴 것인가? 고민하던 시점에 ‘유 퀴즈’의 섭외 전화가 왔습니다. 어렵게 녹화를 마치고 4월 21 일에 본 방송이 나갔습니다. 놀라운 일은 그다음 날부터 일어났습니다. 후원 문의로 전화가 불이 났고, 가게에는 손님들이 줄을 섰지요.
모두 파 김치가 되어 뻗어 있는데, 한 직원이 신부 님을 다급하게 불렀습니다. “신부 님! 이것 좀 보셔야겠는데요.” 신부 님 앞에 놓은 것은, 방송인 유재석 씨가 아무 말도 없이 5 천만 원의 후원금을 입금하신 통장 내용이었습니다.
신부 님은 그런 마음들이 모여서 김치찌개 식당이 유지되는 게 아닐까 생각합니다. 돈보다는 마음들이 모여서 말이지요.】

So that no one stands on the edge of a precipice
What is a priesthood? No, what is the desirable look of a true priest? Clergy (聖職者) refers to ministers (敎役者) who hold religious offices. There are priests, pastors, monks, and teachers.
So, what kind of person should a good priest look like?
First, there must be love and consideration.
A priest must love and be considerate of all people. In particular, we need to pay special attention and care to the poor, the downtrodden, and the socially marginalized. The clergy are to comfort and support people through loving service.
Second, live a fair and moral life.
A clergyman must live a moral life, and have an honest and fair attitude. Their actions and choices have an inspiring and safe influence on all people.
Third, lead a life of sacrifice and dedication.
A priest must have a spirit of self-sacrifice. He sacrifices himself to give love and service. He must prioritize his faith and mission over material desires.
There are probably many more that come to mind. Here, in the writings of Father Joseph Jeon Sam-yong of the Parish of Suwon, <So that no one stands on the edge of a precipice>, you can find a desirable image of a priest, so I summarize and introduce it.
[Father Lee Moon-soo is running 『Youth Table ‘Doorgan’] with the hope that young people will not lose courage even when they are discouraged and frustrated. 「Kimchi jjigae 3,000 won, unlimited refills, free rice.」 The owner of this restaurant, which has been in the red almost every month since opening, is Father Lee Moon-soo.
Moonsoo Lee's original job was a 'Catholic priest'. Somehow he has been working at a kimchi jjigae restaurant from early in the morning to late in the evening for the fourth year. In fact, the priest decided to become a restaurant owner after hearing the sad story of a young man who died of starvation at a gosiwon.
So Father Lee Moon-soo wanted to create a ‘restaurant’ where anyone could come anytime and fill their stomachs with a comfortable mind. After a year or so, he found the current building while looking for a space to open a restaurant with a principal of 30 million won.
As soon as I saw the rooftop with a panoramic view of Mt. Bukhansan in Seoul, I was sure that young people could take a breath and be comforted here for a while. Due to the lack of manpower and funds, the menu was set at one kimchi jjigae, and the price was set at 3,000 won, the average price of a university meal.
Since he runs a restaurant, he is experiencing a variety of things different from when he only works as a priest. Among them, there are a few memorable anecdotes. It was one day, less than two months after opening the door, when the freezing temperature of minus 10 degrees or less continued.
His father and son found a restaurant together. I was in a hurry to think that I had to warm myself up by serving him a quick-boiled stew. But then the child shyly called the priest. Then I hesitated, not knowing what to say. Then the father of the child said.
He said, “He said he wanted to donate the piggy bank he’d been saving for over a year.” He accepted it haphazardly. oh my god! When I counted it later, it was well over 100,000 won. How much money would that have been for a ten-year-old? The sincerity and goodness that I have accumulated one by one in a piggy bank for someone made me want to work harder.
One day, a woman in her 50s came into the restaurant after dark and emptied a bowl of rice into kimchi stew. She then said she would pay and she stood at the checkout counter. She is getting ready to take the money, when she suddenly says in a whisper that her guest is coming.
“Please count all the guests here, priest!” The guest paid for everyone's meal and left. It wasn't until it was time for each of them to pay their bills that the young people finally heard that someone had paid for the meal instead of them. They said that it was so surprising that what they saw in the movies was happening to them.
And then he added. “I will definitely help others when the opportunity arises.” Maybe she's the words the 50-year-old lady guest most wanted to hear? Recently, there was an opportunity that greatly changed my life as a restaurant keeper who runs a kimchi jjigae restaurant.
Will the restaurant remain as it is? Will you increase the number of stores even if it is too much for more people? At the time I was thinking about it, I got a call from ‘You Quiz’. After a difficult recording, the main broadcast went out on April 21st. An amazing thing happened the next day. The phone was on fire with inquiries about sponsorship, and customers lined up at the store.
All of them are green onion kimchi, and an employee called the priest urgently. "Father! You should see this.” What was placed in front of the priest was the contents of the bankbook in which broadcaster Yoo Jae-seok deposited 50 million won without a word.
The priest thinks that the kimchi stew restaurant is maintained because of such thoughts. Rather than money, hearts come together.]
